Each year, the National Career Development Program for Researchers in Pediatric Clinical Pharmacology provides support for two scholars. Each scholar will receive:

  • Up to two years of support
  • Up to $100,000 per year for the scholar’s salary and fringes (Note: Scholars will be required to dedicate at least nine months [equivalent to 75%] of their total professional effort to career development and health-related research).
  • Up to $25,000 per year for research development costs
  • A primary research mentor selected from participating program faculty to provide training and guidance
  • An individualized Faculty Mentoring Committee that meets twice yearly and includes three to five faculty members with relevant expertise. At least one of the faculty mentors will be a member of the Executive Committee or Internal Advisory Board for this program.
  • Peer mentors selected from early career faculty members who have already received independent National Institutes of Health (NIH) career development (K) awards or have recently transitioned from K-to-R grants.

During the program, each scholar will work closely with the primary research mentor to identify a hypothesis-driven project in one of the three research theme areas. The Executive Committee and the Scholar’s Faculty Mentoring Committee will approve the research project.

To refine their grant-writing skills, scholars will participate in grant writing workshops, seminars, and writing groups. Scholars will be expected to disseminate their research results through presentations at national meetings and publications in peer-reviewed journals. They will also complete training in Enhancing Rigor and Reproducibility and Responsible Conduct of Research.
